Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Spike TVAs Amber Heard's legal battle against her estranged husband Johnny Depp continues, her friend is revisiting the night she called the police to allegedly protect Heard.
In court documents, Heard described a Saturday evening in late May at the couple's home that prompted her subsequent divorce filing and restraining order against the Oscar nominee. Depp "demanded we call our friend iO Tillet Wright to prove his paranoid and irrational accusations about some delusional idea he was having," the actress described in the papers. According to Heard's account, Wright eventually urged her to get out of the house and subsequently called the police on Depp.
When officers arrived at the home, an LAPD spokesperson told E! News Heard decided not to file a report and police concluded no crime had occurred and left.
In an essay for Refinery29, Heard's friend is now revisiting the sequence of events from a personal point of view.
"I called 911 because she never would. Because every time it happened, her first thought was about protecting him," Wright described.
"When I was on the phone with both of them and heard it drop, heard him say, 'What if I pulled your hair back?' and her scream for my help, I wondered like so many times before if I should break the code of silence that surrounds celebrities and invite the police into the situation, and in a split second decided that, yes, I was going to," the photographer continued. "I realized that as long as I was protecting the abuser from consequences, I was enabling the abuse and I could no longer partake."
At a point in the essay, Heard's friend described seeing a blood-stained pillow and clumps of hair on the floor after another alleged incident between the couple in December.
However, according to Wright, Heard was battling a mental tug-of-war in her relationship with her husband.
"I witnessed firsthand the absolutely baffling mental pretzel that an abused person puts themselves into, trying to balance the desire to protect their aggressor, with the knowledge that their swollen face is unacceptable," the photographer wrote.
Wright is equally upset about Heard's allegations against Depp because she says the actor was close to her also. "He had been my friend, too, a person I loved very much," Wright wrote in the essay. "A person I had once referred to as a brother...I knew him to be soft and gentle, with a temper and a dark side, but a golden heart. I didn't want to believe it either, until I saw the wreckage."
Though the actor has not directly addressed the accusations against him, Depp's rep released a statement shortly after the couple filed for divorce.
"Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life," Johnny's rep told E! News. "Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly."
