In Defense of Beyoncé's 2016 CFDAs Suit

Because it was amazing and you should know why

Everyone has an opinion, so what did you really think of Beyoncé's sparkling suit?

For starters, a Queen Bey red carpet appearance has become somewhat of a rare sight. The fact she even showed up to the CFDAs, with her entire family, the night before she performed back-to-back Formation Tour shows in New York, is reason to thank our lucky stars.

Now, the real reason I'm writing this is because my own office couldn't quite put its finger on why the outfit was or wasn't a smash…but #IAintSorry, I knew exactly why this outfit was a hit.

So, let's talk some fashion.

Her Suit Was Out of Place: In fact, it really wasn't. This year's recipient for the Board of Director's Special Tribute was David Bowie. The iconic performer was known for his louche glamour and androgynous style, which is exactly what Beyoncé went for...and nailed. Her striped Givenchy pantsuit had plenty of feminine, fashion-y elements (just look at that sparkle) yet it still paid proper homage to its menswear roots with its spectacular tailoring.

Her Wide-Brimmed Hat Was a Weird Fit for a Red Carpet: Also false. April 27, 2016 marked the first date of the Formation Tour, which means for the last 41 days she's been in character. A character we all know, love (emphasis on love) and support, so why would last night be any different? She mixed her current stage style with a little real life, and thus, that beautiful, beautiful hat was born.

There Was No Star Power: How wrong you are. While everyone and their moms wore a slip dress (Lauren Conrad, Sara Sampaio, Emily Ratajkowski...just to name a few) or a slip dress-like silhouette, Beyoncé stunned in something different. Like she always does. Remember that time she wore a show-stopping naked dress to the 2015 Met Gala? Consider this its 2016 replacement.

Statement Jewelry Was so Last Year: In an age where dainty jewelry rules, Beyoncé's not convinced and therefore we're not convinced either. She wore $9 million (yes, million) worth of Lorraine Schwartz jewelry last night—including a necklace with more than 100 carats—and we're really into it. Could this mean statement jewelry is on its way back? Perhaps. Does this mean I'll be running out today in search of a blinged-out choker? Absolutely.

And that is how you accept the 2016 CFDA Fashion Icon Award.
