When the sun emits its rays, the stars will come out to play.
We may have improvised on the traditional saying, but it doesn't make the circumstances of the season any less true. With brighter days, beachside nights and Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling" on repeat, the summer is proving once again that it's the time to be single and mingle.
Within a month, three major celebrity couples came tumbling down like dominoes: Kylie Jenner and Tyga, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik. Simply, it seems the approaching summer air is no match for young Hollywood romance. Instead, it's scent coaxes a longing for those fiery summer flings immortalized in films like Dirty Dancing, The Notebook and Grease.
Take Hadid and Malik, arguably the most low-key former duo of the group. They mysteriously started dating in late November as winter approached, marking the beginnings of "cuffing season"—that Urban Dictionary term for the colder months where singles latch onto each other for those snowy nights of Netflix and chill.
A source tells E! News trouble had been brewing between the pop crooner and his supermodel girlfriend around the time of her 21st birthday come late April. "During her birthday they were fighting," the insider revealed to E! News, adding that they weren't doing well then, and have "broken up and [gotten] back together a few times."
While the source maintains the two could reunite any day, it seems when you're young, genetically gifted, rich and operate on a packed schedule across continents, the world really is your oyster—and you may feel tempted to shuck something new.
As for Swift and her beau of 15 months, a source told E! News that Harris "has been bored for a while and was hoping the spark would come back, but it hasn't." Fortunately, there are plenty of sparks to be found around those forthcoming summer campfires.
Sadly, the couple had just celebrated their 1-year-anniversary in March and the "Shake It Off" singer acknowledged Harris in a speech for the first time during her remarks for the Best Tour Award at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.
"For the first time I had the most amazing person to come home to when the spotlight went out and the crowds were all gone. So I want to thank my boyfriend Adam for that," she gushed at the time.
While Harris told fans on Twitter that "a huge amount of love and respect" remains after their split, the real silver lining here is Swift now has the perfect heartbreaking material to inspire her next album—and plenty of summer parties to find a new special someone in between time in the studio.
To complete the trifecta, Kylie and her on-and-off rapper boyfriend went their separate ways for the second time in early May. While their relationship had been fickle before, sources told E! News it had been "a long time coming," finally ending right in time for a solo summer.
Shortly after the breakup, the "Stimulated" rapper was sighted on a shopping spree during the Cannes Film Festival with lingerie model Demi Rose Mawby while Jenner started spending more quality time with rapper PartyNexDoor, including a night of bowling and serenades at the piano. However, a source warned not to mistake the new sightings of the 18-year-old reality star for a bonafide relationship brewing.
"From the outside it looks like there is a lot more going on between [Kylie and PartyNextDoor] than what actually is," E!'s source explained. "They're just enjoying each other's company and Kylie is trying to have fun and get her mind off Tyga and stay strong because she's pretty hurt."
There's no better elixir for getting over a breakup and having some fun than the summer sun.
