When actors inhabit a role for some time, the characters they play are bound to rub off on them, which is exactly what's happened for Tituss Burgess and Ellie Kemper with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. With two seasons under their belt—season two is out on Friday, April 15—and a third already announced, Burgess and Kemper both said their outlooks on life have changed from playing Titus Andromedon and Kimmy Schmidt.
"Well, I'm always drunk," Burgess joked about the changes to his life.
"But always elegantly so," Kemper added. "You never cross the line."
Burgess is of course referring to fans sending him pinot noir—his breakout moment from season one was a song called "Peeno Noir," which is "an ode to black penis"—whenever he's out. The moment was so successful he's launched his own wine line, Pinot by Tituss.
"If I'm to be perfectly honest, I'm all around—I've always been a happy person, but it just has put my life into overdrive of happiness," he said. "Even on my worst days…the influx of joy that I get from interactions with fans…is a treat. That is the one thing I can say. Kimmy and Ellie have brought a lot of sunlight into my life."
Kemper said each character's defining strengths make them fun to play. "As hokey as it sounds, I do feel like in times of struggle or challenge to think of, ‘OK, I know Kimmy's can-do attitude and response to this would be to keep going,'" she said.
As for what to expect in season two, well, don't look for nudity. However Titus does get some loving and Kimmy continues to grow and thrive, despite dealing with issues. Remember, she's strong as hell, damn it.
