Well this is a plot twist we weren't expecting on or off the small screen.

General Hospital co-stars Brandon Barash and Kirsten Storms have decided to split after two years of marriage.

"We are splitting due to the cliché irreconcilable differences, but we're splitting amicably," Brandon shared with Soap Opera Digest. "We have every intention of remaining a family through this and successfully co-parenting our kid and retaining a friendship in the efforts of raising her in a healthy environment."

He continued, "This was not a hasty decision; a lot of thought and therapy went into this."

After seeking professional help to work on their relationship, the pair ultimately decided that it would be better to go their separate ways for the sake of their two-year-old daughter Harper.

"We went to therapy for a long time, trying to figure out how to communicate better with each other," Kirsten explained. "It's not anything that we dislike about each other…"

Brandon added, "But we've decided that raising our daughter in two separate homes would be a healthier choice for all of us."

Fans of the long-running ABC soap opera may know the pair as Johnny and Maxie. Others may recognize Kirsten as Zenon from the Disney Channel original movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century.

Whatever the case may be, followers of the couple may be surprised to hear of the split. After all, every sign pointed to a happy family over Easter weekend as both parties shared adorable family photos on Instagram.

"There was nothing that went into this outside of what we've told you," Kirsten explained. "We're doing what we feel is best for ourselves and Harper."

Brandon added, "People are going to speculate because they always want to, and they always want to place blame, but it was a joint decision that we thought everyone in our family would benefit from."
