ABC FamilyIt's time to say goodbye to one of ABC Family's—er, sorry, Freeform's—longest-running shows.
Switched at Birth will end after its upcoming fifth season, creator Lizzy Weiss announced in a heartfelt Twitter post.
"This season of #SwitchedatBirth will be our final one. We are ending the show after an amazing 103 episodes with pride, love, and gratitude," the showrunner wrote.
The groundbreaking series followed two teenage girls who discover they were—you guessed it!—switched at birth at the hospital. One grew up in a wealthy family (Vanessa Marano's Bay Kennish), another grew up in a working class neighborhood and, after a childhood illness, lost her hearing (Katie Leclerc's Daphne Vasquez). The show incorporated sign language via its unprecedented portrayal of the deaf community.
The show is currently filming its 100th episode—written and directed by women, writer Linda Gase and director (slash star) Lea Thompson—and the cast and crew have been posting emotional tweets all week long.
"The upcoming fifth season of Switched at Birth, which includes the milestone 100th episode, will be the final season for the Peabody Award-winning series," the network confirmed to E! News in a statement. "The 10-episode season will finale with a special 90-minute episode."
