Now that Fuller House has officially been renewed for a second season by Netflix, another round of will-they-or-won't-they has kicked off regarding the return of Mary-Kate Olsen and/or Ashley Olsen. Both famously declined to appear in the revival, and several cheeky references were made to their absence in the first season. But is there a chance they could have a change of heart and say "You got it, dude!" if asked to make an appearance in season two?
Before the show's Feb. 26 debut, series creator Jeff Franklin told E! News he's hopeful one or both of the twins will come around.
"I am still hopeful that Mary-Kate or Ashley or both of them will come back and be a part of it, even if it's just for an hour. We miss that. Everybody does feel that hole in the family," Franklin said. "But it's like, all family reunions, there's always somebody that doesn't show up. But hopefully next time around, we'll have them back."
However, a source tells E! News that nothing has changed for the fashion designers in terms of their decision to not appear in the series. (Netflix had no season two casting updates.)
Their on-screen dad and real-life friend Bob Saget, who reprised the role of Danny in several season one episodes, is still cautiously hopeful, jokingly telling E! News' Jason Kennedy, "I'm like Leo DiCaprio, I never let go!"
He continued, "I'm friends with both of them, I love them a lot and they just didn't really want to act that much, that's not what they do. It would be fun if the show is a success, comes back and then they could show up. I don't know." Still, there are no hard feelings, as Saget said, "They will do what they want and I love them a lot."
Still, it's hard to imagine either Olsen will change their mind, as they've had some time to think about reprising the role of the youngest Tanner sister.
"I've been talking about this for years. Like five, six, seven years ago, Jeff and I started talking about it," John Stamos, who serves as a producer on Fuller House (and, duh, is Uncle Jesse!), said of approaching the cast to return. "So they all knew about it and they'd hear rumors."
But after the initial announcement that Fuller House was officially happening, the Olsens said they hadn't heard about the project. "I ran into Bob [Saget] the other day and we didn't even talk about it," Ashley told Women's Wear Daily after Stamos announced the project on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "I'm shocked I haven't heard from John [Stamos]," Mary-Kate added.
While Stamos initially fired back, he later cleared the air, explaining the situation to Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show, saying, "I think there was some confusion. They said first I didn't ask them. And I didn't personally, but I was told they were asked. So I had a knee-jerk reaction and said, 'Bulls--t, I did ask them.' And they got upset, so I did call and talked to Mary-Kate and explained what the show is going to be and told them I'd love for them to be on there and they decided not to, which I respect."
