Vice President Joe Biden will introduce the singer, who will perform her Oscar-nominated song "Til It Happens to You," and he will also use the opportunity to speak out about sexual assault awareness, E! News learned Thursday. He will attend the Oscars with wife Jill Biden.
"Til It Happens to You" is featured in the documentary The Hunting Ground, which is about sexual assault at college campuses. The vice president had in November penned an op-ed about the subject. He is a longtime advocate against sexual assault and domestic violence and drafted the 1994 Violence Against Women Act.
Lady Gaga, a rape survivor, had last year joined forces with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to co-pen an op-ed to raise awareness about the politician's "Enough Is Enough" bill, which aims to combat sexual assault at public and private universities in the state. It was later passed by a unanimous vote and signed into law.
The vice president will attend the Oscars with wife Jill Biden, while Lady Gaga is expected to bring her fiancé, actor Taylor Kinney.
The Bidens are fans of Lady Gaga—her and Tony Bennett's duet of "Cheek to Cheek" is featured on their 2015 holiday playlist.
Lady Gaga is co-nominated for Best Original Song with Diane Warren, competing against Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith for the Spectre song "Writings on the Wall," David Lang's "Simple Song #3" for Youth, J. Ralph and Antony Hegarty's "Manta Ray" for Racing Extinction and The Weeknd, Ahmad Balshe, Jason Daheala Quenneville and Stephan Moccio's "Earned It" for Fifty Shades of Grey.
This marks the first Oscar nomination for Lady Gaga, who had also performed at last year's Oscars, singing a Sound of Music medley in honor of the legendary musical film's 50th anniversary. She also recently took the stage at the 2016 Grammys to perform a tribute medley to David Bowie, who died at age 69 last month.
