It was the end of the world as they know it and Scully (Gillian Anderson) felt fine. In The X-Files finale, "My Struggle II," the conspiracy at the heart of the series finally came to a head. And everything ended. Or did it? Yes, Fox left Mulder and Scully go again with one mighty cliffhanger. Here's what happened:

Mulder (David Duchovny) went missing early in the episode as Tad O'Malley (Joel McHale) returned to the air, this time claiming everybody was infected with alien DNA and it would be used against them to destroy the world via disease. He was wrong, obviously.

While Mulder, bloodied and dying, hit the pavement in search of the truth (of course), Scully raced against time with Agent Einstein (Lauren Ambrose) to stop the spread of disease, but she had help. Her old pal Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) returned with quite the story.

Shortly after The X-Files ended and Mulder and Scully went on the lamb, Reyes was contacted by Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis). Yeah, he survived that big explosion at the end of season nine. He presented her a somewhat odd offer: Hang out with him and she'll be saved from the upcoming end of the world. So she said yes? A little weird and out of character, but whatever. Reyes told Scully she was wrong. The alien DNA in her saved her, back when she was abducted she was marked as a chosen one.

While Scully and Einstein did their best to figure out how to get a cure going, Mulder went to see an old friend. With Reyes out of town visiting Scully, CSM was left alone and joyfully took responsibility for, well, everything.

Well, not everything. CSM said the aliens predicted humans would be their own end: see global warming, the decreasing bird population, etc. Human kind was going to go extinct, he said, he just decided the time table. But good old Mulder wouldn't take CSM's offer and denied a cure of alien DNA. Miller (Robbie Amell) showed up in his Mustang and took Mulder back to DC.

Meanwhile, Scully and Einstein found the cure and Scully set out to save her beloved. But she was too late? Or was she? After reaching Mulder and Miller in gridlock with the cure, she determined he was too far gone. He needed stem cells. From whom? William. How do they get to their son? Good question. And that's where the UFO showed up and beamed down on Scully, Mulder and Miller. And that's when The X-Files ended.

Or did it? Stay tuned to E! news for more scoop on The X-Files.
