24 is back (again!), but without Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Who will save the day?

According to Fox, the new 24: Legacy pilot will feature an all-new cast of characters "and retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and complex interweaving storylines, with each episode representing one hour of an eventful day." So … it's a 24 reboot. 24 veterans Howard Gordon, Manny Coto and Evan Katz are executive producing the show.

The pilot will revolve around a military hero's return to the US and "the trouble that follows him back," Fox said in a release. The hero asks CTU for help in saving his life and—surprise—has to stop what could be one of the largest-scale terrorist attacks on American soil.

"The pilot was just ordered, so in terms of casting we've had conversations with producers but we're not out to an actor yet," Fox boss Dana Walden told reporters at TCA.

The new hero will be a "significant focus of the show, there's also a female co-lead," Walden said. "It doesn't feel like it's fully replicating the original in terms of how much Jack Bauer is carrying, but it's a very prominent lead."

Fox recently brought 24 back with 24: Live Another Day, a 12-episode event series in 2014. Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane appeared. Talk of continuing the series without Sutherland surfaced shortly after the Live Another Day finished. Could we see old friends?

"Never say never, but right now, not. There's a time-jump, this is a new organization, a new cast of characters, a completely different story in terms of the special ops group we're focusing on. It's a very contemporary story...activating sleeper cells in the United States. There are nods in the pilot to prior agents, there are a couple of photos that feel reminiscent of the original, but no ongoing characters," Walden said.

24 is just the latest series to return from the dead for Fox. They network is debuting a new chapter of The X-Files at the end of the month and officially announced Prison Break will return from the dead.
