Sarah Jessica Parker has walked so many miles in Carrie Bradshaw's stilettos that we often confuse the 50-year-old actress with her beloved Sex and the City character.
But, SJP would like to remind us all (again) that she's not Carrie IRL. In fact, she's not any of the characters she's played before (but she understands how we might have a little trouble grasping with this reality).
"People probably don't realize that Carrie Bradshaw was radically different from who I was, who I continue to be," Sarah Jessica tells WSJ Magazine. "I think that sometimes because we look alike and live in the same city and haunt the same neighborhoods, that it was sort of like I was playing in the sandbox, when in truth it took real work every day to be her, to understand her, to not judge her."
Sarah Jessica explains that while the process of transforming into a character can be "very challenging," it's also one of the greatest parts her job. As she tells WSJ Magazine, "I still love the idea of being somebody else."
The mother of three, who has been happily married to Matthew Broderick since 1997, is currently working the upcoming HBO series Divorce. "The character I'm playing is incredibly different from me in many ways—she handles complexity differently than I do, her marriage is different from my own, and she's struggling financially in a way that I don't at this point in my life," says SJP.
Again, though, playing a character is what she loves. SJP seems to be preparing us now, though, that Divorce will not be an extension of SATC.
Let's just hope her new character gets to borrow a few pairs of Carrie's Manolo Blahniks, just for old times' sake.
Speaking of nostalgia...watch the video below to look back at SJP gushing about winning an Emmy for SATC.
