We've made it to the home stretch of Dancing with the Stars

We're pretty sure it was September yesterday, but somehow here we are, burning our mouth on a pastry while we watch very fit people show off how productive they've been over the past few months. Nick Carter was not much of a dancer in September, and tonight he pulled off a crazy complicated jive like he'd been doing it for years.

Unfortunately, this is exactly when eliminations on this show get particularly sad. Tonight, despite two perfect scores, we had to say goodbye to Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson, who just barely missed making it to the final night of season 21.

Tonight, it was judge's choice dances and freestyles, and while the judge's choice routines were fun and all, they hardly compared to the freestyles. A couple of them were kind of out of this world to the point where we were rewinding them multiple times.

Let's run down the dances, shall we?

8. Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold: 27/30

Alek is a cutie patootie but the rumba is not his kind of dance.

7. Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson: 30/30

Sure, it was a fine foxtrot, but the music didn't go with the dance so it felt a tad awkward.

6. Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough Quickstep: 30/30

Is it weird that Bindi and Derek are so flawless that we often watch them dance and we're like, "Whatever! Perfect as usual?" This was one of those times.

5. Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess Freestyle: 30/30

We thought watching Nick Carter gyrate to "Larger Than Life" was going to be the best thing we were going to see all night, but we were wrong. It wasn't bad at all, but other things were better.

4. Nick and Sharna Jive: 30/30

Every dance makes us jealous of people that can dance, but this one especially! Jives just look like so much fun and this one looked effortless.

3. Carlos and Witney Freestyle (with Alexa PenaVega, Paula Deen, and Hayes Grier): 30/30

Somehow Carlos and Witney put sports and Paula Deen into the same dance and made it work.

ABC

2. Bindi and Derek Freestyle: 30/30

Just gorgeous, tear-jerking, etc etc. We do have one gripe though: Doesn't it seem kind of unfair for Derek to have them put up a picture of Bindi and her dad without Bindi knowing, forcing her to react live on national TV? If we were Bindi, we would not appreciate being surprised with a picture of our dead father in front of millions of people, but that might just be us.

Also, haven't we kind of seen this dance before, with Derek dressed in khakis? Still loved it, but just wondering...

1. Alek and Lindsay Freestyle: 30/30

Now THIS is Alek's kind of dance. He was downright sexy in this sort of teen dystopia/The 100-themed number that involved climbing up and down an 8 foot wall. We have a weird thing for teen dystopias so this worked for us very much.

So who will take home the mirror ball in tomorrow night's finale? Our money has always been on Derek and Bindi, and now that Carlos and Witney are out of the game, it seems like a fight between Bindi and Nick. (We love you, Alek, but they're clearly better dancers, and so are Carlos and Witney.)

Who's your pick to walk away with the prize? Sound off in the comments!
