There's not a face mask we don't like: sheet masks, gold masks, LED masks, multi-masking—you name it; we love it.

But there's one facial skin-care product you may have been apprehensive in trying…that is, until now. Overnight, or sleeping, masks may seem messy (no one wants to see product residue on their pillowcase)—not to mention overkill (our skin will only absorb so much until it just doesn't)—but the point of the mask isn't to swim in the stuff.

Most sleeping masks are meant to create a protective layer on the skin, so that when you're sleeping and your skin is naturally restoring itself, the moisturizing ingredients you either put on beforehand or in the sleeping mask itself can better absorb into the skin.

Oftentimes, quality overnight masks have a lightweight, gel or gel-cream formula, which should be used after your nighttime skin routine—after your serums and moisturizers—or as directed in the instructions. It may feel sticky at first, but much of it should absorb into your skin while the rest will dry, creating that barrier. When you wake up, gently wash off the residue and, ideally, your skin should feel fresh and hydrated.

Of course, not all sleeping masks are created equal. In this case, keep clicking for our best picks.
