Gwen Stefani has been in the spotlight long enough to know questions about her personal life will inevitably be brought up in interviews, but this question still managed to catch her off guard.

During an appearance on the Today show to promote The Voice—which she attended alongside fellow coaches Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton—Stefani got caught up in a cringe-worthy moment with host Matt Lauer regarding her split from ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale.

He asked, "Your personal life has been in the headlines. Are fans misinterpreting something here or is it all right there in front of us in terms of the song?"

"Oh my God! Put me on the spot!" she replied, looking a little uneasy.

However, she managed to come up with the most perfect, truthful answer in response. "What I'll say about that is that I've never put a record out where I'm actually going through things in real time."

She continued, talking about her latest song and video for "Used to Love You:" "I wrote that song like a couple weeks ago, and then I sat in front of a camera in a dressing room randomly not making a video, just to do some video for the screens behind me, and then it went out and it's the video and it's like all very real."

The 46-year-old singer admits the support that came after the video was encouraging.

"It's just nice to do music and have that support from everybody," she reveals. "I don't know these people, but for whatever I feel their energy and their love coming back at me and that's really comforting."

E! News confirmed Stefani split from Rossdale in August after 13 years of marriage. The two share three children together, Kingston, 9,  Zuma,6, and Apollo, 1.

"While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," the couple said in a statement at the time. "To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time."

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
