Amy Schumer: "I Need to Be Treated for Overexposure"

Amy Schumer won't let her haters slow her down from rolling full steam ahead with her bawdy brand of humor.

"I've already gotten a lot of death threats for about eight years…The backlash has already started," the Trainwreck star said last night at the Elle Women in Hollywood gala. "I've been getting backlash since 2006. I've been getting death threats."

Meryl Streep, who was sitting at a table at the foot of the stage, could be heard gasping, "Oh, my god."

"I'm not going to stop," Schumer said. "Gloria Steinem said to me that the most important thing is don't burn out. She said we want change so quickly that it could feel discouraging."

Lena Dunham presented Schumer with her Elle award.

"I didn't really want to come tonight," Schumer joked. "I'm really hung over. I'm on tour with my ex-boyfriend and it's been a nightmare."

The Inside Amy Schumer star received some of the biggest applause of the night. "I know everybody is sick of me and I need to be treated for overexposure," she said with a big smile.

On a more serious note, Schumer urged women to have each others' backs. "We need to focus all our energy on raising each other up and just living to our full potential because if we don't do it—the women in this room—if we don't do it, then who will?" she said. "We have the tools."

And then she said, "We have the clits. I didn't want to say balls."

Also honored at the 22nd annual celebration were Kate Winslet, Carey Mulligan, Salma Hayek, The Danish Girl star Alicia Vikander and Salma director Ava DuVernay. Dakota Johnson received the Calvin Klein Spotlight Award and Gena Rowlands was honored with the L'Oréal Paris Legend Award.
