It was a night full of surprises—and no one was more shocked than Jon Hamm himself.

The Mad Men actor was stunned when he heard Tina Fey call his name as the winner of the 2015 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. After all, this was his eighth Emmy Award nomination in the category in nearly a decade. Hamm had been performing since 2008 in the role of Don Draper for seven seasons of the hit show on AMC—a role many have argued he was born to fill. Still, after almost ten years of going home empty-handed, the Emmys finally caught up to him.

"It's not my first time around the briar patch here," Hamm told E! News backstage at the 2015 Emmys following his win. "I was not expecting anything other than to try and have a nice night and see some friends and hopefully some friends win and I would say 'hooray' but I got to say 'hooray' for me, so that was nice."

In fact, he was the only one of his fellow Mad Men nominees to go home with a statue, but that didn't stop the room full of his peers—and the rest of the world watching—from standing up to cheer him on.

"It's an incredible night, unexpected, but nice," Hamm humbly added.

While the statue may have been unexpected, Hamm's style of getting on stage was even more of a surprise.

Since the 44-year-old was sitting in the front row directly in front of the stage, instead of walking to the set of stairs towards the side when his name was called, he walked right up to center stage, threw one leg up and flung his body onto the floor of the stage, gripping until he could get his whole body up. Tina Fey was spotted hunched toward Hamm with his statue, part confused and part amused.

"Well, that was just stupid! It seemed like the shortest distance between two points is a straight line and I was sitting right there and Tina said my name and usually when she says my name, I have to come running," Hamm said, reflecting on his less-than-graceful decision not to just use the set of stairs.

We just hope he didn't get anything on that dapper tuxedo!
