The event was held at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles and the stars were out for television's biggest night.
The Saturday Night Live alum's opening monologue was jam-packed with cameos and a memorable tune all about how many shows he managed to watch this year to prep for his big hosting gig.
But with so much on the agenda, the show wasted no time flat to get started in handing out the awards.
First up to take center stage and accept their Emmy Award was none other than Mom's Allison Janney, who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Shortly thereafter, Simon Blackwell, Amando Ianucci and Tony Roche won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Veep.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series went to, drum roll, Veep's Tony Hale! This marks the second win and third nomination for the actor.
The night's big winner for Best Director in a Comedy Series was Transparent's Jill Soloway.
Jeffrey Tambor then accepted his trophy after winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on Transparent.
The award marks his first-ever Emmy win, and after collecting himself, he told the crowd, "I've been given the opportunity to act because peoples' lives depend on it."
He then dedicated his award to the transgender community and said: "Thank you for letting us be a part of the change, God bless you."
After a short commercial break, Julia Louis Dreyfuss went home the winner in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for her work in Veep. This evening's award marks her fourth consecutive Emmy win.
The award for Best Reality-Competition Program went to the always popular series, The Voice.
The stars of Empire, Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard were on hand to present the award for Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special, which went to Jane Anderson for Olive Kitteridge.
The award for Outstanding Actress for Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special was given to Regina King for her outstanding work in American Crime.
Frances McDormand was decidedly stoic when accepting her award for the titular role in Olive Kitteridge and did her best to keep her speech sweet and brief.
Lady Gaga, looking as stunning as ever, presented the award to Richard Jenkins for his performance in Olive Kitteridge.
The Emmy also went to Olive Kitteridge for Outstanding Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special, they received 13 nominations this year alone.
And now, onto the next! The Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Series went to the team from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.
Inside Amy Schumer won the Emmy for Variety Sketch Series, and the comedienne Amy Schumer told the audience, "I'm so proud and this show fights for what we believe in.Thanks everybody who has helped me and the girl who gave me this sort of a smoky eye, I really love it, and I want to thank my family."
Jon Stewart then accepted the high honor for Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the final year of his hit Comedy Central show.
The awards for Best Writing in a Drama Series were handed out to Game of Thrones' David Benioff and D.B. Weiss moments after Stewart left the stage.
Uzo Aduba won for her role in Orange Is the New Black for the second time in two years and received a standing ovation from her co-stars in the audience.
Peter Dinklage took the stage to win his second Emmy for his role in Game of Thrones, and he admitted that he wasn't in the slightest bit prepared to win this evening, joking, "I was even chewing gum!"
And possibly the biggest moment of the night was when Jon Hamm crawled up on stage (literally) and took home the award for his role as Don Draper in the final season of Mad Men.
The actor has been nominated countless times, but this marks his first win for the AMC show. Up next, the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series! Adrien Brody handed the trophy to the incomparable Viola Davis for her work in How to Get Away With Murder.
"The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity," she emotionally told the crowd. "You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."
Mel Brooks presented the award for Best Comedy Series which went to, why none other than Veep,of course!
Tracy Morgan made a surprise appearance to present the final award of the evening and he emotionally spoke about his recovery following his traumatic car accident almost two years ago. And after a few tears, and a ton of laughs, Morgan announced the winner for Best Drama Series which went to Game of Thrones.
The HBO hit's massive win marks a historic moment in Emmy history, too! After taking home 10 awards tonight, Game of Thrones now holds the record for the most Emmys any series has won in a single year. Congratulations!
