The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon revealed Justin Bieber cancelled a planned sketch for his appearance on the show September 2 without any advance notice. The funnyman alerted fans of the show to the "Where Are You Now" crooner's big appearance with a tweet, saying "Doing something fun with Justin Bieber then he's performing with The Roots."
In a twist of unfortunate fate, Fallon nor fans never got to find out what that "something fun" was going to be when Bieber cancelled only a few hours before he was set to start taping without a clear reason.
"It's like, I don't care," Fallon said in Billboard. "I mean, I wish they'd told me weeks ago because today's the day, and now we have to crunch and think of an idea to do. And I have to apologize to the crew guys who built the set and the wardrobe people and everyone." How considerate, Fallon!
While Bieber has been making the media rounds with appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Today and The Tonight Show, this news comes as a surprising blunder on what the media is calling his well-orchestrated comeback—the stellar MTV Video Music Award performance, the surprising tears that followed, brand new ash blonde locks, and two chart-topping hits featuring a fresh sound.
Still, it's clear Bieber missed a major opportunity to earn a spot in television history. Fallon's newest season of his hit show has debuted with well-received sketch collaborations that continue to trend in the media days later, including a new rap medley with Justin Timberlake, a lip-sync battle with Ellen DeGeneres, and a high-profile phone call with Hillary Clinton.
Fortunately for Bieber, Fallon has no hard feelings toward the young star.
"It's not what he does. He's here to sing, so as long as he's comfortable and it sounds good then we did our job," Fallon explained, "And if I talk to him and make him funny and make him look good, that's my job. That's all I have to do."
