The ugly sandal trend is back with a vengeance, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. At first we were naysayers, but after seeing chic celebs like Vanessa Hudgens out and about in the metallic flats, we quickly changed our tune.
The celeb version will cost you, but if paying an arm and a leg for a trendy sole isn't your style, we consulted E! Style Collective DIY expert Joy Cho of Oh Joy! to help us doctor up an almost identical pair of slides at a fraction of the cost.
To make this super-simple sandal at home, all you will need is:
Ruler
Scissors
Hammer
A pair of bargain slides
Metallic contact paper
Flathead gold round studs
1. To start take any pair of wide-strap sandals and measure the width of the band of the sandal (Joy's pair measured 1.75 inches wide).
2. Cut clean strips of contact paper (one for each strap) measuring a little less than the length of the strap (Joy cut her pieces to 1.5 inches wide). Pro tip: To ensure a clean cut, use a ruler to trace a straight line to cut along.
3. Once the strips are cut, peel off the backing like a sticker and securely stick to straps, leaving a peek of strap on each side. Pro tip: If you mess up, you can peel off the contact paper and try again until you get it lined up evenly. (Contact paper develops a stronger hold over time, so the longer that contact paper stays in place, the better it adheres.)
4. Now that the strips are applied to the sandals, use your scissors to cut off any overhang so that the contact paper stops at the sole.
5. Lastly to complete the project, firmly press tacs into the area where the straps meet the sole and use a hammer to nail them firmly into place. Pro tip: Joy sticks with just a few tacs along the sole, but for a more embellished effect you can add tacs around the entire sole.
And voilà, just like that you have your new, goes-with-everything summer shoe.
