Has Doctor Strange found its female lead?

Rumor has it the studio has offered Rachel McAdams the starring role opposite of Benedict Cumberbatch in the highly anticipated Marvel film, which is slated for a Nov. 4, 2016 release.

However, no official casting announcement regarding McAdam's character has been made just yet.

Thus far there's been a wall of secrecy surrounding the future film, save for the fact that Scott Derrickson has signed on to direct with Jon Spaihts penning the script.

The first draft of the Doctor Strange screenplay was written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange tells the story of Stephen Strange, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the early '60s, a neurosurgeon who travels to the ends of the Earth to find a cure that will restore his hands following a freak accident.

However, after meeting a mysterious sorcerer known as the Ancient One, he follows in his footsteps in an effort to protect the world from evil.

This wouldn't be a usual role for McAdams, who is currently starring in season two of True Detective, however the actress has expressed interest in this genre of films years ago.

While speaking to the star at the Married Life junket in 2008, McAdams explained that she was quite fond of fantasy movies that surpassed the realm of normality.

"I love that, to be a part of something that surprises the audience and makes you wonder about the way films are made," she told E! News. "So it would be nice to be involved with something where film is being experimented with in and of itself. How the stories are being told is being manipulated."

She added, "I also love fantasy. I love graphic novels. I'm so excited that people are into that and I think they make a great leap to the screen. So something very fantastical...I love dressing up and playing people that aren't the people you see drinking your morning coffee."

Perhaps that opportunity has arrived.
