Jimmy Kimmel is "intrigued" by The Martian, and rightfully so. After all, the late-night host's version of the film's first trailer is unlike anything that's ever been done before. In his ongoing pursuit to publicly make fun of his pal Matt Damon, Kimmel parodied the movie's trailer on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday.

"I don't want to bring you down but some very sad news [came] out of Hollywood this week," he said told his audience during the opening monologue. "You probably heard, Matt Damon has a new movie coming out. I know. It doesn't make any sense to me either. But it's a movie from director Ridley Scott about an astronaut who gets left behind on Mars and has to find a way to survive. This will be the second movie where Matt Damon plays a guy who's stranded in space. You know, when Ben Affleck goes into space, he's blowing up a meteor to preserve the human race. Matt Damon goes up there, he gets lost and has to be saved."

As actual footage from teh trailer rolled, a voiceover altered the original plot. "For astronaut Mark Watney, six was a crowd, life was on autopilot and his love life was going nowhere fast—until he lined the walls with plastic and did some deep space exploration of his own," the narrator said as Damon grunted and, uh, got to work. "Because sometimes the greatest love of all is under the zipper of your space suit. Matt Damon is The Mastronaut: Emission to Mars." The edited trailer ended with Damon's character shouting, "In your face, Neil Armstrong!"

Kimmel kidded, "That's 44 years he's been with himself researching that role."

Jokes aside, the 20th Century Fox film also stars Sean Bean as Mitch Henderson; Jessica Chastain as Melissa Lewis; Jeff Daniels as Teddy Sanders; Chiwetel Ejiofor as Venkat Kapoor; Donald Glover as Rich Purnell; Kate Mara as Beth Johanssen; Michael Peña as Major Rick Martinez; Sebastian Stan as Chris Beck and Kristen Wiig as Annie Montrose. The sci-fi flick arrives in theaters Oct. 2.

Perhaps Kimmel will have Damon on his show to promote the movie.

Then again, he'll probably run out of time.
