Happy birthday, Pac-Man!

The beloved yellow video game character turns 35 today, and what better way to celebrate than with a new version of the classic arcade game? The game's creator, Bandai Namco, has released an updated iOS app that includes new features and a revamped interface. With new mazes and a multi-player option, people can have even more fun with Pac-Man.

Japanese company Namco released the game on May 22, 1980, and was the first of its kind. Instead of having another arcade game filled with guns and shooting, Pac-Man focused on a cartoonish character who just wanted to eat. Who could blame him?! It was released as a game that was geared toward couples and women and immediately became a huge success.

It took over pop culture, appearing on cereal boxes, TV and was even talked about on the radio. Eventually it would launch different versions, including Ms. Pac-Man.

But Pac-Man has come a long way in his 35 years of life and will officially become a movie star in Adam Sandler's upcoming movie, Pixels. Sandler teams up with Peter DinklageJosh Gad and Michelle Monaghan to save the world from vintage arcade characters, but based on the trailer, it's not easy fighting Pac-Man!

In fact, even the cast is surprised to learn that Pac-Man is a bad guy LOL. What happened to the ghosts?

As the trailer explains, the '80s characters, including Donkey Kong and Frogger, came to try to take over planet earth when there was a misunderstanding with a time capsule and some aliens.

At one point, Gad realizes the "only way to take down Pac-Man is with ghosts." We'll have to see the movie to find out what happens, but in the meantime, happy birthday, Pac-Man!
