Nemily as endgame? It almost happened!

Ever since Revenge came into our lives four years ago, many fans have been rooting for a hookup between Emily (Emily VanCamp) and Nolan (Gabriel Mann), her sidekick in revenge and her best friend. Unfortunately for those shippers, a Hamtpons hookup between the two never happened.

And now, heading into the ABC drama's series finale on Sunday, May 10, showrunner Sunil Nayar is revealing that he and the writers once considered having Emily and Nolan's relationship take a romantic turn. For real.

"It's something we toyed with definitively," he tells E News. Alas, it was just not meant to be. Saying the relationship was already "so rich," Nayar explains the writers ultimately decided not to meddle with the duo's already kind of perfect dynamic.

"Emily's heart in the kind of familial way was always going to be with Nolan, and to try to add him to the mix that was the Jacks and the Aidens and even the Daniels, felt like that would really confuse the story that we felt were pretty clearly telling," Nayar says. "So in all honesty, as much as they would've been magic together, I think it would've muddled he elegance of the show going forward."

And just because we'll never get to see Nemily as a romantic couple, Nayar promises that fans will still be satisfied by their relationship in the series finale, "Two Graves."

"We made sure all the characters that people care about definitively have that scene—they each get those scenes together where you get a sense of where they're finishing," he previews. "Whether they make it out of this show live or not, I think all these relationships that are important to our viewers will get satisfying conclusions and resolutions."

Another relationship that will definitely get its due in the finale? Emily and her father, David Clarke (James Tupper), who recently revealed he's been diagnosed with cancer. Nayar says the father-daughter duo will "have a resolution," and explains why the writers decided to make David terminally ill just as the series was ending.

"We really wanted things to get out of [Emily's] control," he says, "And she's been such a master of her universe and to put her really back on her heels going into this last episode, to give her all the ultimate challenges, because she can't make her dad better...so a lot of the things that we've done are there to put her through her emotional pass."
