There is a new version of the famous dress that swept the Internet in February, but this time it isn't fickle camera lighting and a piece of clothing tricking our minds...it's a cat and a set of stairs. The 9Gag post simply asks readers to decide whether or not the cat is walking up or down the stairs, but no one can seem to agree.
Similar to the dress debacle, people are giving various reasons as to why this feline could be walking up or down. Some cite camera angles, while others actually discuss the cat's bodily position—that's right, biology got involved. One commenter argued, "[It's walking] down because generally the wood would be flat on the horizontal portion of the stairs and the stone is on the back/vertical portion of the stairs."
Another commenter agreed with the "down" assessment but also added that the cat's tail plays a large role in determining his direction. "Down for two reasons, one architectural and the other biological. First, the tiles and mosaic are traditionally facing the person coming up the stairs, which they are here. And second, look at the cats tail—it's facing upwards, or the opposite of the direction its moving in. If the cat were to go up the stairs, its tail would point downwards."
But not everyone was aboard the "down" boat. One user argued, "It's clearly up, you just have to imagine the camera in a different angle."
Another person also said the cat was walking up, using biological evidence that differed from those who argued "down."
"Look at the cat's tail—it's facing upwards, or the opposite of the direction it's moving in," wrote another. "If the cat were to go up the stairs, it's tail would point downwards."
