Candice Bergen, Today

We feel you, Candice Bergen.

The former model and Murphy Brown star continued her book publicity tour with a stop at the Today show on Tuesday, where she expressed surprise that folks had zeroed in so much on what she wrote about her weight in her new memoir, A Fine Romance, on sale today.

"It was a scant reference on page 150 or something," Bergen said, referring to when she called herself "fat." "I was just saying, I don't enjoy eating lunch with some women who only have kale. I just find it limiting...I'd rather not go on, if that's what I have to eat to fuel myself."

Sounds as though kale just became the new Dan Quayle...

"I'm very comfortable," she reiterated. "I mean, would I love to lose 10, 15 pounds? Absolutely. But I just haven't taken the steps to do it."

Not one for a limited diet, Bergen wrote in her book, "I live to eat. None of this 'eat to live' stuff."

The 68-year-old actress, instead of ruing the aging process, definitely seems to be embracing it instead—at least where her freedom to do as she darn well pleases is concerned!

"I'm on the older margin these days," Bergen said. "I play mothers—mothers of old men, by the way! It's so sort of distressing. But yeah, I feel free, frankly, pretty much across the board."

Speaking of letting things be, Bergen has admitted to past touch-ups, but she also seems to have slammed the door on the possibility of more plastic surgery, telling People last week, "I'm clearly in need. But I frankly just don't care enough. I don't even get those shots anymore because it hurts so much."

Next up for the sitcom icon—whose most memorable post-Murphy Brown roles included inevitably tough yet vulnerable women on Sex and the City and Boston Legal and, even though she was scheming and murderous, in Miss Congeniality as well—is an appearance this Sunday on Battle Creek playing, yes, a mom to 50-year-old Dean Winters' character.
