Sleek hair gets a fresh take

The slicked-back hair movement just got that much cooler.

The look, which ruled the red carpet this awards season (see: Jennifer Lopez at the Oscars and Nicki Minaj at the Grammys), is one of the biggest hair trends of the year. And while Kim Kardashian made headlines for revealing shocking platinum locks when attending the Balmain fall 2015 show during Paris Fashion Week (shellacked back, no less), the style that sent us reeling was found on the runway.

Major models Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio and Joan Smalls wore hair styled with deep parts. Strands flowed freely on one side and were tightly smoothed back and tucked behind the ear on the other. Balmain used the look to showcase large statement earrings, but the bigger statement was its fresh twist on slick.

This less severe play on the ubiquitous trend, which usually finds hair pulled straight back and glossed all over, has us mapping out other ways to style it: Adding a few micro-sized underbraids to the sleek side of the Balmain style will create more depth and texture.

And for those who want to blend this trend with ‘70s revival, a smoothed-back look pinned at the crown and then billows out beneath the ear with volumized kinks is a more adventurous way to go slightly sleek—and the best new way to go business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back.

How's that for high impact?
