Winning the red carpet is a serious science.

Not only does it take the right dress, accessories and makeup but hair must be on point to even be considered for a Best Dress nomination. And although each separate component may be beautiful, they might not always work together. It's all about style synergy!

To get the perfect pairing, we asked celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena to share the best hair looks that complement—not compete—with three fashion trends we're bound to see on and off the red carpet.

Wob City
This is the year of the wavy lob—or wob—and voluminous blowout. What they lack in intricate design, they make up for in sultriness and dimension.

"When rocking a wob or voluminous blowout, you want to wear a dress that's not so embellished, because it would be too much va-va-voom to do both," advised Marc.

Pair waves or amped-up hair with a dress featuring a simple silhouette. Opt for a striking color that will contrast against any background. We love how this stark-white Tadashi Shoji fall 2015 piece looks conservative, but its clean lines coupled with textured hair screams glam. Just don't forget to use hairspray to keep every strand in place. We suggest Pantene Shaping Extra Strong Hold Hairspray, which allows for great movement for all those carpet-walking moments.

Sparkle and Shine

It seems like metallic gowns are always in season, but too much going in the hair department can dilute the wow-factor. "When wearing something with a lot of sparkle, the chignon is the way to go," Marc said. "That is the time to wear something with a bit more sparkle and detail."

The chignon, which basically ties your hair in a knot at the nape of your neck or back of your head, brings a simple, classic touch to an eye-catching ensemble, like this Jenny Packham fall 2015 stunner. Because the hair style brings attention to your upper half, consider opting for a more detailed, higher neckline. Finish the look off with an anti-frizz product for a sophisticated shine.

Femme Fatale
We've been seeing retro waves for days. Apparently, the celebs from the ‘20s were on to something. Pair glamorous curls with flattering silhouettes that hug your curves for a sultry, ladylike look.

"If you're rocking the old Hollywood Glam look, then a dress that is very feminine complements that style," noted Marc.

This Marchesa fall 2015 number cinches in at the waist, while the color and delicate draping are both romantic and fierce. If you already have wavy or curly hair, opt for an enhancing product like Pantene Curl Defining Mousse for extra oomph.

There you have it—the cutest couples to hit the red carpet.
