Unfortunately, you can't take back a bad first impression. You can, however, make many better ones.

Whether you're hitting the red carpet for the first time or on a job interview, that initial meeting can oftentimes leave a lasting impression. So how do we combat nerves? How do we win over a crowd? We tapped Stylehaul blogger and E! Style Collective member Carly Cristman for her get-confident advice.

Most will say a firm handshake and a Best Dressed-winning outfit is enough. But Carly's surprisingly simple tips could mean the difference between 10 subscribers or 100, a stranger or new friend, rejection or a new job.

"Your clothing says who you want to be, but your smile says who you are," said the YouTube star, who uses Crest 3D White Whitestrips to make her pearly whites shine bright.

With fashion, you can influence how others perceive you depending on your mood. For example, if you want to be taken more seriously, dress more professionally. On the other hand, a smile always exudes a comforting energy.

Be the first to walk into a room and introduce yourself, Carly suggested. When appropriate, forget the handshake and go in for the embrace.

"I love to hug people first; it breaks the tension," she said. "I try to bring positive energy to make sure everyone has a great time, too."

Along with the good vibes, it's always a bright idea to keep eye contact with the person you're talking to and remember their names. A good trick is to repeat the name in your head three times; then say it back to the person you're talking to in a natural sentence.

It's nice to meet you too, Carly.

When in doubt, just smile.
