And the first (televised) award of the night goes to...Sam Smith!

The "Stay With Me" crooner took home one of the biggest awards at the 2015 Grammys: Best New Artist! Smith beat out Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Brandy Clark and Haim to take home the coveted trophy. And as an added bonus, one of his BFFs Taylor Swift presented him with the award!

"Oh my gosh, I've got to try and say something without crying," an emotional Smith said while accepting his award, going on to thank his label and management before addressing his parents.

"Mum and dad, I won a Grammy!" the breakout star said. "Thank you!"

While chatting with Ryan Seacrest before the show began, Smith, who was nominated in six categories, admitted the award he most wanted to win was Best New Artist "because you can only win that one once."

And something that only happens to you once, aside from winning Best New Artist at the Grammys? Having Stevie Wonder sing your own song to you, which is what happened to Smith before he hit the red carpet!

"I was in my changing room and Stevie Wonder was next to my changing room," Smith told E!'s Marc Malkin. "He asked me to come to his room and I walked in and he started playing my song to me, "I'm Not the Only One," and he started singing it to me and I was like, 'What the f--k?!' I just freaked out and got on my phone and filmed a little. It was incredible."

And while the other four acts in the category didn't win the award, they didn't leave totally empty-handed as Swift offered up some words of wisdom before she presented. Why? "I happen to have a lot of friends in this category this year," the "Shake It Off" singer said, referring to Smith and Haim, the band made up of three sisters who are set to join Swift on her world tour.

Her advice?

"As a former loser of Best New Artist of 2008, if you don't win this award it's going to be fine," Swift said. "Just shake it off." (Swift lost the award to the late Amy Winehouse.)
