Missy Elliott Is Cool With People Not Knowing Who She Is, but We're Not (Seriously?!)

Let us teach you a little somethin' about the woman who puts her thing down, flips it and reverses it

Dear people who took to Twitter to publicly reveal that you don't know who Missy Elliott is: Initially, we were disappointed and ashamed. But now, we just feel bad, because you've clearly been deprived of great music for the last 20 years.

The hip-hop artist made a (what was supposed to be) surprise appearance during Katy Perry's halftime show at the Super Bowl yesterday, and while many jumped to their feet and brushed off those dance moves from 2002, others were very confused.

"Who is Missy Elliott?" they dared to ask, and some even praised this "brand new artist" that KP was kind enough to introduce to the world. Facepalm a thousand times.

We wish we were making this up, but the tweets speak for themselves...

Wow...kids don't know their music history. #MissyElliot

Luckily, Missy wasn't offended at all.

In fact, she thought it was pretty funny and saw it as a form of flattery.

Missy Elliott brought some of the sickest hip-hop beats to the radio for the past 20 years, but even more than that, her music came with some life lessons.

She taught us to get our freak on. She introduced new greetings like, "What da dilly yo?" She bonded with many of us over the fact that she, too, can't stand the rain. She sparked meaningful discussions about whether or not it was worth it, because she'll work it. She taught us how to say, "I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it" backwards without even thinking about it.

But most importantly, Missy Elliott taught us that not only is she supa dupa fly, but she runs this. And all these years later, that hasn't changed.
