If you're itching to get back to Pandora, you're going to have to wait a while longer.

Avatar director James Cameron revealed that Avatar 2 won't be hitting theaters until late 2017, according to the Huffington Post. He admitted that writing three sequels is so complex that he is forced to push back the release date. He is filming the highly anticipated films one-at-a-time, but will then release them over three consecutive years.

The first sequel was set to release in 2016.

"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," he said.

He also said that the goal is to finish penning the three scripts by the end of the month.

"We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films," he said, explaining why he and his team would tackle so much at once. "We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that.

"And parallel with that, we're doing all the design," he added. "So we've designed all the creatures and the environments."

Avatar was released in 2009 and quickly made history by becoming the highest-grossing film of all time by pulling in $2.8 billion. It also took home the Golden Globe for best drama and won several Oscars for cinematography, visual effects and art direction.
