For a journalist, it usually isn't fun being the headline for a change.

60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft has publicly apologized for cheating on his wife after being found out by the National Enquirer, which reported on the affair this week.

"I had an extramarital affair that was a serious lapse of personal judgment and extremely hurtful to my wife and family, and for that I have nothing but regret," the veteran newsman said in a statement obtained by E! News Wednesday.

"My wife and I are committed to each other and are working hard to get past this, and consider it a private matter."

The statement was first sent to the New York Post.

Kroft's wife is journalist and author Jennet Conant, 55. The New York-based couple have one son together.

The Enquirer, meanwhile, reported that the 69-year-old Croft had been carrying on for three years with another woman—the tabloid quoted a number of racy text messages—and had been spotted with her as recently as Dec. 17 at Manhattan's Essex House.

Now ironically, hindsight being what it is, Kroft was the one who presided over 60 Minutes' famous 1992 interview in which then presidential candidate Bill Clinton admitted to "marital wrondoing" with Gennifer Flowers. Asked if she knew Flowers, too, Hillary Clinton replied, "Oh, sure."
