And just when you thought ombré was over for 2014.

Rachel McAdams was spotted at LAX on Dec. 19 with a new two-tone 'do that could help us answer an age-old question: Do blonds or brunettes do it better? (Actually, better question: What's "it"?) Apparently, both hues do quite well when paired together in a chic dip-dyed look. The star looked cozy as she walked through the airport in a gray wool Smythe coat, plaid scarf and oversize shades.

The new style also looks to be a few inches shorter (yes, obviously we're on lob alert) than Rachel's normal below-the-shoulders length. However, that could be a trick of the eye—her hair just might be tucked beneath that scarf.

The star is no stranger to of-the-moment hair switches: Back in April 2013, she rocked a fiery red color. While many thought the hair change was for a movie, McAdams revealed that it was just for her own experimentation (and her mom is a redhead too!). In August of that same year she took her locks to a light coppery hue.

McAdams also had a brief electric pink moment in 2006 (now that we think about it, maybe Rachel is the original Nicole Richie). Lately, though, the star had been sticking with a golden blond color. Perhaps the new two-tone 'do is her way of transitioning into a darker, sultrier look for winter.

What do you think of Rachel's dip-dyed look?
