You would have never guessed that Angelina Jolie's directorial debut would give her more than just directing credits, it would give her a best friend.

Unbroken, the story of how an Olympian became a World War II hero, was more than just a job for the actress—it was a passion project. The actress appeared on Today to discuss her forthcoming movie, but really talked about the "spectacular" life of Louis Zamperini, whom the film is about.

"He's a great man, a true hero and an inspiration," Jolie tells Tom Brokaw, while sitting along side stars Jack O'Connell and Miyavi. "He's also our friend, and we are fortunate to be in a position to bring his message to the world and his story to the world, but it is his legacy. It's our responsibility to get it right because he deserves it, so we're a little nervous but we're excited for more people to know of his story."

The Maleficent star became very close with Zamperini who actually turned out to be neighbors with the Oscar winner! Not only did they work together, they practically lived next door to one another, too!

She tells Today's Savannah Guthrie that because she became so close to the 97-year-old man that she was actually able to see him before he passed away and even show him a screening of the movie.

"It was a very profound and very moving moment," Jolie says. "He took care of me and made me feel ok about his passing, so that's who Louis was."

Although the drama and action will most definitely tug at audiences' heartstrings, the actress-turned-director explains that her movie's themes ultimately make it the perfect holiday present.

"There's also a message that's relatable today to everybody, which is the strength of the human spirit and how to overcome obstacles," Jolie explains. "We feel that's a beautiful message to bring to everybody around Christmastime."

Jack O'Connell, who portrays Zamperini in the film, revealed that the movie's inspiration gave him some words of advice before tackling the role.

"Be hearty," revealed O'Connell, who said that those were the words Zamperini wrote in the actor's book.

The actor admitted that at the time he wasn't sure what it met, but later realized how intense his role would be. He even called himself naïve for thinking he could handle it!

But Miyavi, who portrays the sergeant in the Japanese war camp, confessed that he was nervous to portray such a ruthless character and even worried about what Japan would think of the role and the movie. But after talking to his A-list director, he knew he was in good hands.

"This is all about his message—forgiveness—and how strong a human being can be, so I'm now confident everyone who is suffering can learn and receive his message," Miyavi explains.
