Weird week at the box office. A few talked-about movies are hitting theaters, but nobody seems sure if any can actually deliver some serious coin.
Stop-Loss has an ensemble cast of some of Hollywood's brightest young stars, including Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum, but war movies, especially about Iraq, have not performed well lately (Lions for Lambs, Rendition, Jarhead, In the Valley of Elah and on and on).
Superhero Movie is just ridiculous from start to finish and could come in at No. 5—or No. 1, like the equally ridiculous Meet the Spartans did last month.
Most likely, however, gambling thriller 21—loosely based on the bestseller Bringing Down the House by Ben Mezrich—will take the top spot. The story of a group of MIT kids counting cards and taking Vegas for millions is already adored by many, so the public intrigue is there. Also, the cast has been eeeverywhere, which really helps.
From Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess to Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne, there's a star in there for almost any moviegoing demographic.
My Call: Look for 21 to come in at No. 1 with, yeah, you guessed it, $21 million bucks.
