After nearly three years together, former Smash co-stars Debra Messing and Will Chase have decided to call it quits.

A rep for the actress confirmed the split to E! News and added that the two "remain close friends."

So what lead to the breakup between the two TV stars?

A source tells us that distance was a key factor in their decision to part ways romantically, with Debra working on her NBC show The Mysteries of Laura and Will on Nashville.

"The problems started when Will went from a recurring to a regular role on Nashville. He's had to spend a lot more time down there," the source explained.

"Debra, meanwhile, shoots her show all week here in NYC. It's sad because they really care about each other so much. They didn't want this to happen. But at the end of the day, their schedules and the distance truly got to be too much."

Another insider shared how the former Will & Grace star's current focus is split between her son and her current show.

"She is working long hours so her main priority when she has free time is to be with her son."

Debra recently opened up to E! News about why she signed on as the lead role of Laura in the new dramedy.

"I'm always scared of working too hard and being a part of something that becomes something that I don't want it to become, but I really just felt really great about this from the very first minute I read it," she admitted.

"That was the same thing with reading the Will and Grace script. I read it and I felt like, ‘OK, these characters come right off the page and the voice of the show is clear.' To me, it was worth the risk."

Us Weekly was first to report the split.
