Eddie Redmayne is a sartorial superhero! (Not to mention a quick-thinking gentleman. That Hannah Bagshawe is a lucky lady.)

The star of The Theory of Everything swooped in and saved co-star Felicity Jonesfrom a major wardrobe malfunction on Monday at their film's New York premiere at the Museum of Modern Art's Titus Theater.

The pair were on an escalator that was close to gobbling up the train of Jones' long Elie Saab dress when Redmayne deftly stepped in and yanked her skirt out of the way, preventing it from getting caught. Goodness, we can hear the potential riiiiip in our heads at very thought of what could have happened!

But although Redmayne certainly prevented a dress disaster, the whole incident didn't go down quite as dramatically as some reports would have it...

We're told that he did not hit the emergency stop button, thereby triggering an alarming buzzing sound.

Regardless, the English actor is a hero to couturiers everywhere. He's already getting major Oscar buzz for his performance in The Theory of Everything as brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease when he was 21. Jones plays his second and now ex-wife Jane Wilde.

Asked about the pressure that goes with playing such a globally renowned figure, Redmayne told E! News at the NYC premiere, "The stakes were so high from the word 'go,' from the second we got the part.

"They were such inspiring people," he added, referring to Stephen and Jane. "The fact that they enjoyed the film was a great award. I think their story is a wonderful story and I would love people to go and see it. So any buzz and kind words, of course, it's like properly flattering. I hope it encourages people to go see it."

The star of the film being awesome and lovely in real life certainly doesn't hurt, either.
