If only there were cameras rolling when Anne Hathaway once went to Matthew McConaughey's house for a party.

It would have been perfect for Punk'd or Candid Camera.

At last night's American Cinematheque tribute to McConaughey, Hathaway said the two became friends while filming the upcoming Interstellar.

"I have a story and it's kind of embarrassing," the Les Misérables actress said.

It sure is.

McConaughey invited Hathaway and her husband Adam Shulman to his L.A.-area home for a party.

"My husband and I drive up. It's a Sunday. It's a beautiful day," Hathaway said. "There are no cars around and we thought, OK, we're on time. We're on time for once."

McConaughey greeted them at the door with a big smile on his face

"Matthew goes, 'Yeah, you gotta come in,'" Hathaway recalled. "Matthew turns around, again [with] a smile and goes, 'The party was last night.'"

Oops.

But McConaughey told the couple to stay and have a glass of wine.

"That glass of wine lead to the first bottle," Hathaway said. "I stopped counting after four and then I went with you to someone's surprise birthday party that night...You were so good to me and Adam."

Hathaway was impressed with McConaughey since day one. "It's our first day on Interstellar," she remembered. "I don't know what to expect but I meet you and you are present. You seem so cool and you seem so sincere and I walk away and I think, Wow, that guy's just amazing."

Witherspoon also participated in the tribute. "He grew up on cattle ranches, dirt roads and oil fields instilled with the values of his hardworking father, his equally hardworking brothers and his tough-as-nails and super sweet southern mother who told him never to look at the dust on the table, focus on the rose in the glass," the Wild star said. "And all of this is written on his face, a face that tells the story of drive and sincerity. He grew up appreciating his family and where he came from."
