Michael Phelps is facing the consequences of his actions.

Less than a week after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence, Phelps has now been suspended from USA Swimming.

"Michael's conduct was serious and required significant consequences," USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said in a statement to E! News. "Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement. We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions."

In addition to a six-month suspension from USA Swimming, Phelps will have to withdraw from the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championship in Russia next August. He also won't be receiving monthly payments from the organization during his suspension.

Shortly after his arrest in Maryland, the 29-year-old broke his silence on Twitter voicing his regrets.

"Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines," Phelps shared in a series of tweets. "I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility."

He added, "I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."

Over the weekend, Phelps also shared that he was taking a break to attend a "program" in hopes that an incident like this would never happen again.

"I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself," he shared online. "I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself."

In November 2004, Phelps was arrested for DUI. He received 18 months of probation and a fine.

With 22 medals under his belt, it's obvious that swimming is a major part of Phelps' life. Today, however, the athlete is putting his energy into places other than the pool.

"Right now, I need to focus my attention on me as an individual and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future," Phelps shared on Twitter.
