Tonight is the night! The Vampire Diaries finally returns to The CW, and we sat down with mastermind Julie Plec to get down to the nitty gritty about what exactly to expect. First order of business: What's up for Damon and Elena? Now that he's in some godforsaken otherworldly world for an unknown period of time, will Elena be nursing a horribly shattered heart all season, or will she move on?

The answer may surprise you because....Elena is getting a new love interest!

But it's a little more complicated than that. Watch our exclusive interview with Plec above to get all the details.

Plec revealed new info on what Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) fans can expect, and well...put down the pitchforks and just push play above, Delena fans! It's not as bad as you think. Julie still refers to Damon as "the love of her life," and the jury's still out on whether Elena can possibly have eyes for anyone else in the world.

As far as what to expect as a whole, Plec also got us really psyched when she revealed that this season is going to feel very reminiscent of season one.

"Vampire Diaries this season is so fun and fresh and so exciting to write," Plec said. "All the characters are going through all this crazy stuff that is really deeply rooted in their own emotional experience. Stefan [Paul Wesley] is making all these choices about what kind of life he wants to live next and it doesn't necessarily involve anybody that he already knows. Caroline [Candice Accola] is really struggling with the fact that her friends are scattered and she can't even go home and sleep in her own bed. Tyler's [Michael Trevino] human again and is terrified that he's going to do something to trigger his curse. Alaric [Matt Davis] is back teaching! And we're dealing with the fact that he had to come back and start his life over but he doesn't really feel comfortable in his own vampire skin."

When we pressed for more Stefan scoop, Plec teased that Stefan's new love interest is not someone to be envied because she has no idea that he's a vampire!

"Stefan has a love interest and we'll find that out pretty darn quick," Plec said. "I'm not making any promises on how well that's going to go. Stefan's created this whole universe that he wants to live in and he's basically Mr. Denial."

We're sure that's going to end with rainbows and sunshine and a happily ever after, right? We kid, we kid!

Check out our in-depth interview with Julie above, and then tune into The Vampire Diaries tonight at 8 on The CW.
