It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Supergirl on CBS! The Eye Network has landed the new superhero project from Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler with a series commitment, E! can confirm. E! News previously reported Warner Bros. was shopping around a series about Superman's cousin.

There have been many incarnations of Supergirl throughout the years, but the CBS series will follow Superman's cousin from Krypton, Kara Zor-El. The series will see Kara at 24 years old deciding to embrace her powers and be the hero she was always meant to be.

CBS landed the project with a series commitment, now that doesn't mean it will see the light of day, it greatly increases the projects chances of making it to air thanks to penalties the network would have to pay up. Fox did the same with the new Gotham series.

Superheroes are all the rage these days, both on the big and small screen. This year projects include Gotham at Fox, an origin story about Batman and his villains, Agent Carter at ABC, a new drama following the Captain America character played by Hayley Atwell, The Flash and iZombie on The CW and Constantine on NBC. Marvel has more than one series in the works with Netflix, the first to bow will be Daredevil starring Charlie Cox. Meanwhile, projects for next season based on comic books are starting to take flight with a possible Teen Titans series, a new Walking Dead companion show and a Lucifer series. And let's not forget the upcoming Avengers sequel and Batman vs. Superman on the big screen. Superheroes at every turn!

Supergirl has already taken flight on the big screen with a 1984 flick starring Helen Slater. The character has also popped up on Smallville and in animated shows.
