Experts to determine whether the 5150 hold should remain in effect

After being admitted to the hospital for the second time in a month, Britney Spears underwent a psychiatric evaluation Thursday morning to determine whether she should be held for the maximum time period of 72 hours.

The troubled singer was taken to UCLA Medical Center early Thursday morning and placed on a 5150 hold, meaning she is considered a potential danger to herself or others.

A rep for the Spears family declined to comment to E! News on the hospitalization.

However, a source close to the situation told E! News that a team of experts completed an initial examination of Spears Thursday morning and will continue to follow the situation over several days.

At that time, they'll make a judgment call on whether the situation warrants a lengthier period of observation.Earlier in the month, Spears was released from Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after just over 24 hours.

Spears was sleeping in her room following the evaluation—apparently her first rest all week—but may take visitors later in the afternoon, a source said.

The plan to have Spears recommitted was engineered by her manager, Sam Lutfi, and had nothing to do with her parents, the source said.

"This was all Sam's doing. Sam pulled this on Britney last night, and Britney called Lynne because she was scared," the source told E! News. "Lynne was blindsided. She did not engineer getting her put in the hospital."

Lutfi alerted Spears' psychiatrist to the star's apparent mental instability and had the doctor call in the 5150, the source confirmed. Spears' attorneys also worked with Lutfi to convince the singer that she would not regain visitation with her sons unless she submitted to consistent psychiatric treatment.

Though Lynne was initially opposed to having her daughter committed, another insider told E! News that she changed her mind after witnessing Spears switching back and forth
between different accents and claiming not to remember what she said when she changed accents.

Britney also reportedly accused her mother of "betraying her trust" and insinuated that Lynne wanted to sleep with her boyfriend, Adnan Ghalib, sending Lynne into hysterics and convincing her that the hospitalization was warranted, the source said.

Spears was taken to the hospital via ambulance and was admitted at 1:58 a.m., while Lutfi, Ghalib, her parents and friend Alli Sims arrived at the facility shortly thereafter.

Lutfi was initially barred from the hospital waiting area at the Spears family's request but was later allowed to enter at 2:30 a.m.

At the hospital, there appeared to be tension between Lutfi and Jamie and Lynne Spears, as the two sides quarreled over who would take responsibility for making medical decisions for Britney.

"Lynne has wanted Sam out of Britney's life but sees him as a necessary evil," a source told E! News. "As long as Jamie and Lynne aren't in control, they think it is detrimental to her well-being."

Lutfi has methods of his own for trying to keep Spears in check, the source said, claiming that he has "flattened her tires" and "taken the battery out of her phones" in an effort to "control" the off-kilter pop star.

Though Spears' parents would prefer to keep Lutfi out of the picture, they are grateful that their daughter is getting the help she needs, the source said.

"Lynne is glad Britney is being treated. This has always been her wish and Jamie's wish," the source said. "She just wishes that Sam wasn't the one in control and wants him to step aside. This is a family matter."
