In the new sci-fi flick Autómata, Antonio Banderas plays an insurance agent who investigates robots. He also stars opposite frequent co-star and estranged wife Melanie Griffith, who filed for divorce earlier this year.

The trailer for the movie, which is set in 2044, was released this week (watch it below). The Spanish Mask of Zorro and Desperado star sports a shaved head as Jacq Vaucan, an insurance agent of the ROC robotic corporation who begins an investigation into alleged manipulation of robots reported to be defective.

While they are evolving physically, changing their looks from cantaloupe-like to fembot to menacing androids resembling those seen in Star Wars, they also appear to be developing personalities, sparking suspicions of a future uprising.

Griffith plays a woman named Dra. Dupre, while American Horror Story and The Practice alum Dylan McDermott is almost unrecognizable as Wallace, the obligatory skeptic in the movie. And bonus! Oscar-winning No Country For Old Men star and fellow Spanish actor Javier Bardem provides the voice of one of the robots.

Automata is directed by Gabe Ibáñez and was shot in Sofia, Bulgaria, last year. The movie is set for a limited theatrical release in the United States on Oct. 10 and will also be made available on VOD.

Autómata marks the third movie starring both Banderas and Griffith, who have been married for 18 years and share a 17-year-old daughter. Griffith also stars in the new film Akil, which Banderas directed and wrote. It is set for release in December.
