People talk a lot about the '90s, but pop music only really hit its high note in the late-'90s.
It was a grand post-NKOTB, pre-Y2K era, filled with fresh-faced boy bands, feisty girl groups and mainstream punk stars trying oh-so-hard to show they rocked outside the mainstream.
Back then, and even through today, you could tell a lot about a person by the music they listened to! So what did your favorite late-'90s music group* say about you? A lot, baby girl, a lot!
*Fans of individual artists like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Ricky Martin, etc., are not included in these results!
Spice Girls: Sporty, Scary, Ginger, Baby and Posh hit a high-note in the mid-'90s, but the end of the decade brought about a hiatus and Geri Haliwell's departure from the girl group. If, though, the girl power-packed fivesome was still your fav band in the late '90s, you were loyal and optimistic. You're probably the nostalgic type (that 2012 London Olympics reunion was pretty damn spectacular) and tend to be averse to change. No matter, though! Nothing last forever, but friendship never ends.
Destiny's Child: Bug a Boo, you were are a total gem! Pre-"Bootylicious," pre-"The Beygency," pre-Blue Ivy Carter, you, fan-child, recognized the greatness that was Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. You were most likely fashion-forward, confident and pro-woman—all positive qualities that kept you moving in a positive direction.
Blink-182: You're "punk," right?! Blasting "What's My Age Again" and understanding the band's double entendres kind of spared you from the teeny bopper label...right?! You sure hoped so! You probably cursed a lot (and still throw out your fair share of F-bombs today) and made a point of wearing trucker hats unnecessarily, but you did (and do) have a sense of humor.
No Doubt: You had good taste, kid—and probably some bottled up teenage angst, to boot! "Just a Girl" described your love life to a T, and you had the good sense to girl-crush on Gwen Stefani even when she had blue hair and braces. You possibly read/wrote Tony Kanal fan fiction on the DL, but you felt no need to get flashy with your fandom. These days, you've still got an edge, but like Gwen, you've mastered your own uniquely refined sense of style.
Dave Matthews Band: You proudly displayed a DMB sticker on your locker and probably had an older sibling. You made sure "Crash" was included on every mix-CD you ever made and wore your Birkenstocks morning, noon and night. Later on, you'd appreciate the music of Ben Folds Five and Phish, and if anyone ever asks, you're 100 percent organic and fully support local and underground artists.
Green Day: At some point, you dyed your hair an ominious shade of black/magenta/olive green and had a questionable relationship with eyeliner/guyliner for the better part of a decade. You wanted to be a badass, but more importantly, you wanted everyone to know you were a badass. You also probably had have a lifelong crush on Billie Joe Armstrong and are still in awe of his ageless genes.
Dixie Chicks: Ironically enough, if your favorite song was "Wide Open Spaces," today you probably live somewhere within a 4-hour radius of your hometown. You get along fairly well with everyone (some might describe you as "mild" though) and have never gotten in any real trouble. In 2003, Natalie Maines' anti-George Bush comments made you blush, but you secretly appreciated her having the guts to stir things up.
TLC: You were the first of your friends to have a boyfriend and hung out mostly with upperclassmen. You understood the subtleties in "Unpretty" and were familiar with "scrubs" before T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli spelled it out. You probably weren't the most animated of your peers, but you were the girl they all went to (and still go to) for advice.
Savage Garden: You truly, madly, deeply wanted to be truly, madly, deeply in love. You watched a lot of rom-coms, really wanted someone to ask you to the prom and had an impossible crush on the boy on the football team. These days, you're still a hopeful romantic and totally identify with Taylor Swift.
'N Sync: You know what's good for you, baby girl! Your dedication to the best boy band ever fostered the talent and helped build the career of Justin Timberlake—you're welcome for that, world. You've always been enthusiastic with a strong sense of self, and to this day, you use "God must have spent a litle more time on you" as a genuine compliment.
Backstreet Boys: You weren't as gung-ho as the 'N Syncers, but you wanted in on the less-involved fandom. You're friendly, but not bubbly, and while you are easily excited, you rarely screech, squeal, climb barbed wire fences, or do things of that nature. You do, however, get along with different types of people, but beware: There's no bond between boy-band fans of yesteryear. You were team 'N Sync, Team BSB, or a straggler —that choice says a lot, people!
