Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Stars' hits and flops

Warner Bros. Pictures, Columbia Pictures

That's show business, baby. One moment you're at the top of the box office and the next your film is being called "the biggest flop of the year." To these celebs, that moment happened within months of the other.

We rounded up 13 movies stars who had major hits and huge misses within the same year (give or take a few months), and by "misses" we mean their films that were either critically panned or failed to bring in any money. Sometimes, it was both.

1. Sandra Bullock:

Warner Bros. Pictures, 20th Century Fox

The Miss: All About Steve (2009)
The Hit:
The Blind Side (2009)
The Breakdown: Sandra B. is the one of the few and proud who actually showed up at the Golden Raspberry Award ceremony to accept her Razzie, and what made it such a boss move was that she picked up the trophy for Worst Actress in All About Steve the day before accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in The Blind Side.

2. Billy Bob Thornton:

Buena Vista Pictures, Universal Pictures

The Miss: The Alamo (2004)
The Hit:
Friday Night Lights (2004)
The Breakdown: Friday Night Lights was critically adored and eventually the book adaptation was turned into one of the greatest TV shows everThe Alamo, however, is in the top 10 list of biggest box office flops ever, only bringing in $28 million from a budget of $100 million.

3. Eddie Murphy:

Eddie Murphy, Stars' hits and flops

DreamWorks Pictures, Warner Bros.

The Miss: The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002)
The Hit:
Shrek (2001)
The Breakdown: The Shrek franchise is one of the most successful animated film series of all time, but very soon after Murphy's Donkey character captured hearts everywhere, we had to deal with Pluto Nash. With a $7.1 million box office, it's one of the biggest bombs of all time.

4. Jamie Foxx:

Jaime Fox, Stars' hits and flops

Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures

The Miss: Stealth (2005)
The Hit:
Ray (2004)
The Breakdown: Foxx won rave reviews and an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles, but then came Stealth, which was an action flick that also starred Jessica Biel and Josh Lucas. It cost $135 million to make, only brought in $76 million and was trashed by critics.

5. Henry Cavill:

Henry Cavill, Stars' hits and flops

Warner Bros. Pictures, Summit Entertainment

The Miss: The Cold Light of Day (2012)
The Hit:
Man of Steel (2013)
The Breakdown: Even Superman falls, and he definitely did with the film that came before Man of Steel, The Cold Light of Day. It holds a mere 5 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the New York Times called it a "thoroughly incompetent Bourne movie imitation." Ouch. But he's still Superman, so there's that.

6. Channing Tatum:

Columbia Pictures

The Miss: White House Down (2013)
The Hit:
21 Jump Street (2012)
The Breakdown: 2012 was the year of Channing, with 21 Jump Street, The Vow and Magic Mike launching him into A-list status. But less than a year later, he was starring in White House Down, which was generally panned by critics and it didn't exactly ignite at the box office. But no one is worried about good ol' Channing. He'll be fine.

7. Jennifer Aniston:

Warner Bros. Pictures, Columbia Pictures

The Miss: Just Go With It (2011)
The Hit:
Horrible Bosses (2011)
The Breakdown: Even though Just Go With It performed at the box office, everyone agreed it wasn't very good; just another lame film in Adam Sandler's long line of half-assed comedies. We'll get to him later. But her turn as the psycho dentist in Horrible Bosses had audiences in love with her all over again.

8. Tom Cruise:

Tom Cruise, Stars' hits and flops

DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Pictures

The Miss: Vanilla Sky (2002)
The Hit:
Minority Report (2002)
The Breakdown: Tom Cruise's career has been a roller-coaster ride of hits and misses, but Vanilla Sky was a real stinker. But then came Minority Report, which both moviegoers and critics loved.

9. Owen Wilson:

Owen Wilson, Stars' hits and flops

Sony Pictures Classics, Warner Bros. Pictures

The Miss: Hall Pass (2011)
The Hit:
Midnight in Paris (2011)
The Breakdown: Who didn't fall in love with the Woody Allen flick that gave Wilson a Golden Globe nomination? Well, for every person who loved Midnight in Paris, there was a person who hated Hall Pass, the comedy he made with Jason Sudeikis. Critics hated it, and audiences didn't really show up to see it.

10. Tom Hanks:

Tom Hanks, Stars' hits and flops

Walt Disney Pictures, Universal Pictures

The Miss: Larry Crowne (2011)
The Hit:
Toy Story 3 (2012)
The Breakdown: The Toy Story franchise is universally adored and the third installment defied expectations and blew people away. Everyone cried at the end! Everyone. And Toy Story 3 was so good that we pretty much forgot about Larry Crowne, which only got a 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, even though it also had America's Sweetheart Julia Roberts.

11. Adam Sandler:

Adam Sandler, Stars' hits and flops

Columbia Pictures

The Miss: Jack and Jill (2011)
The Hit:
Hotel Transylvania (2011)
The Breakdown: Oh, Adam. Why have you forsaken us? You managed to bring in  good reviews, award nominations and lots of money with Hotel Transylvania, but you had not one, but two big, fat stinkers that same year! We had to decide between Jack and Jill and That's My Boy, which were both torn apart by critics. We chose Jack and Jill because you played your sister and that made us sad.

12. Ben Stiller:

Ben Stiller, Stars' hits and flops

Universal Studios, DreamWorks Pictures

The Miss: Envy (2004)
The Hit:
Meet the Fockers (2004)
The Breakdown: Ben has made three Fockers films, each one earning big money and mostly favorable reviews. But the same year he did the sequel to Meet the Parents, he came out with Envy, which only has a 7 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Stiller even later publically apologized for making the film, and for that we say: You are still not forgiven.

13. Johnny Depp:

Johnny Depp, Stars' hits and flops

Walt Disney Pictures, Columbia Pictures

The Miss: The Tourist (2010)
The Hit:
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
