I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me. I want to thank my sister, Kristina, Stefanie and our teams for their support. We were all looking forward to a great match. From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of the fans for their cheers and understanding. I look forward to returning to Wimbledon next year."
Serena Williams is probably ready to put today in the past.
The professional tennis player, who is currently ranked No. 1 in women's singles tennis, had a rough day at Wimbledon on Tuesday and retired from her first-round doubles match with sister Venus after playing just three games.
In the pre-match warm-up, Williams seemed disoriented and appeared unsteady as she prepared to take on opponents Kristina Barrois of Germany and Switzerland's Stefanie Voegle.
A medic was called to the court prior to the game and Serena was seen crying with her face covered in her hands. And things only got worse once the match began.
"Serena Williams is playing doubles with Venus right now and something is very very wrong. Just hit four straight BAD double faults," SI Tennis tweeted during the tournament. "Serena and Venus retire from the match. Absolutely bizarre from Serena, who has a physic close by as she walks off court."
Serena, who lost in the third round of singles on Saturday to Alize Cornet of France, was seen serving balls that were bouncing before they even reached the net and she could barely catch a tennis ball.
After a number of embarrassing fumbles and a score of 3-0, umpire Kader Nouni consulted with the famous sisters before announcing to the crowd: "Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately, Miss Williams has to retire."
SI Tennis later tweeted that Serena was diagnosed with a "viral illness." She was reportedly seen wiping away tears as she walked off the court.
Following her loss on Saturday, the younger sister spoke with reporters and expressed her hesitation over participating in today's game. "I suck right now at doubles," she said. "I told Venus the other day I don't even want to play because I'm so bad right now."
