The game of love isn't easy—even for professional athletes like Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki.

On Wednesday, the Northern Irish golf star announced he and the Denmark-born tennis star were no longer engaged, explaining in a statement that sending out wedding invitations over the weekend "made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails."

"The problem is mine," added Rory, 25. "I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had."

The now-single stud began dating Caroline, 23, back in 2011. They quickly earned the celeb couple name "Wozzilroy," and their romance played out very much in the public eye. They got engaged on New Year's Eve 2014, with Caroline announcing her good news on Twitter.

And although Rory broke off his I-do date with Caroline today, he kept his commitment to speak with the media ahead of the Europe's BMW PGA Championship. "Yeah, obviously quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself," he said, "appearing at times on the verge of tears," according to the New York Times.

He said the decision "was mutual and amicable," explaining, "We both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on and I think I've said all that I need to say."
