The embattled singer was sentenced to a year in Los Angeles County Jail today after admitting to violating his probation stemming from his 2009 assault on Rihanna. Brown will get credit for 234 days of time served in jail and court-ordered rehab, however, so he only has 131 more days to go.
L.A. Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin also reinstated and extended Brown's probation, which is now due to be up next January.
After pleading guilty to the aforementioned assault on his then-girlfriend in 2009, Brown was sentenced to five years' probationn, 180 hours of community labor and a yearlong domestic violence course.
It's very possible that Brown will not even spend the 131 days behind bars, either. Ultimately the L.A. County Sheriff's Department will determine how much more time he actually serves, based on behavior credits, chronic jail overcrowding and other factors.
Brown was arrested on March 14 for probation violation after being kicked out of the residential treatment facility in Malibu where he had been living. The violation in question was his arrest in Washington, D.C., for allegedly punching a guy in the face during an altercation. He is facing a misdemeanor battery charge back East.
The 25-year-old artist was supposed to go on trail in D.C. last week, but that case was delayed and he was transported back to L.A. in the custody of U.S. Marshals.
In addition to having his probation extended until Jan. 23, 2015, Brown must submit to random drug testing at least three times a week, participate in psychiatric counseling two times a week and attend outpatient therapy at least twice a week. He also must complete whatever remains of the 1,000 additional hours of community service he was given last August when his probation was revoked following a car accident. (Charges related to the crash were later dismissed.)
Brown's next court date is Aug. 13 for a progress report.
