Death is coming.

Game of Thrones returns for its highly anticipated fourth season on Sunday and we think it's safe to say fans should expect to see some major deaths go down on the HBO hit series, as the promo warns, "the war is not over."

Plus, executive producer David Benioff recently teased, "Some of the most shocking and mind-blowing scenes of the entire series come at the end of this coming season. Some very bloody confrontations."

Hey, people (a lot of them) die when you play the game of thrones. But still: gulp!

But before we look to the future, why not take a moment to look back on all the characters we've lost in GOT's first three seasons? Warning, spoilers (if you aren't caught up) ahead!

Included in our ranking? Far too many members of the Stark family (RIP, you beautiful-yet-too-damn-moral-for-your-own-good-family!), a fan favorite character who is originally not from George R.R. Martin's books, and, of course, Khal Drogo, forever our favorite Dothraki. Still, there were some deaths that made us cheer, including one involving liquid gold (season one memories!) and a shadow baby. Yes, really!

But which death was the hardest to watch in Westeros? And which kills made us cheer? Find out by checking out our gallery which ranks of the 21 most important deaths in Game of Thrones' history below!
