Watch: James Van Der Beek Talks New Show

The Beek is back!

James Van Der Beek returns to network television on CBS tonight, with the new series Friends With Better Lives—the show CBS is hoping will be a direct match for fans of How I Met Your Mother (which is bowing out tonight).

FWBL has some funny moments, thanks to a stellar cast including James, Brookyln Decker and Majandra Delfino (Roswell lives!), and a decidedly Friends-ish feel, focusing on a group of friends (some coupled, some not) who, in this case, all think everyone else has it better.

James just stopped by E! Online to chat about his new show, and naturally, we had to ask about not only his promising new show, but also the recent headlines he's made revealing that he once let Justin Timberlake use his ID to get into a Prince performance (Hey, we'd do some pretty crazy things to get into a Prince concert, too!) and the weird quasi-beef he now finds himself in with Entourage star Adrian Grenier.

In case you missed it, James revealed to reporters that Adrian also was up for the role of Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek, and Grenier responded that he's pretty sure James "would've swapped with me to play Vincent [Chase]."

So would James rather have scored the lead in Entourage over Dawson's Creek? What does he have to say to JT's mom? And why should you tune into Friends With Better Lives tonight?

Check out the video above for all the answers—straight from The Beek's boca! (Not our best.)

Friends With Better Lives debuts tonight, Monday, 31, at 9 p.m. on CBS.
